Partnering with Parents

Collaborative and mutually respectful relationships between childcare professionals and the parents of the children in their care are essential in supporting the development of the “whole child”. There is a need on the part of childcare staff to accommodate the preferences of parents regarding daily practices related to their child’s care as much as possible.

Equally as essential, is the need for childcare staff to inform parents regarding their childcare organizations’ program philosophy and objectives. This is particularly true with regards to discipline and child guidance practices as guidelines need to be consistent and followed by all staff.

The Positive ChildCare Program and kit include a Discipline Policy which is based on the Positive Discipline Program. As consistent with current findings and research regarding effective discipline, Positive Discipline is a non-punitive approach that is designed to involve children to use their power in positive ways, focus on solutions and learn important life skills at the same time.

The Positive ChildCare Program also provides ideas on how to involve parents in the childcare setting in a variety of different ways.
